For 10+ years I was completely lost, depressed and addicted. Here's how I turned things around.. ๐งต...๐
1) Meditation I worked hard to establish a daily practice, and once I started seeing that I could calm my mind, I studied meditation intensely and attended retreats. At the time, I thought this was enough to 'fix' me, but I was still struggling. I needed something else...
2) Mindset I realised that my mindset sucked. I was catastrophising everything. So I started listening to motivational videos every morning and subliminal reprogramming as I fell asleep. I started to tackle the negative thought patterns consciously. But this wasn't enough...
3) Conscious consumption I was consuming to lots of negative media. It pulling me down. So I started selecting primarily uplifting and positive media. I stayed informed and curious but didn't let it dominate my mind. I'd been tackling the mental, but I needed to get physical..
4) Weight training Training is my daily therapy. It helped to raise my testosterone levels, improve my body composition and introduced greater discipline into my life. I became more focused, improved my diet and stopped drinking. But I still had bouts of depression...
5) Diet I had been a vegetarian for 14 years. But despite a 'clean' and 'healthy' diet, I had low energy, low testosterone and IBS. I started eating meat, drastically reduced my carb intake and worked on healing my gut. Things were coming together, but I needed to go deeper...
6) Shadow work I was overthinking everything & stuck in the past, so I started creative writing to explore negative emotions & engage my right brain. I explored my deeply held beliefs about myself, others & the world. ๐
I saw negativity clouded my perception of everything & realized that the negative voice in my head wasn't my own. I suddenly saw this negative voice in my head was really an internalized interpretation of how others had treated/ responded to me as a child. ๐
This was a huge realization for me โ an experiential shift. And with this epiphany, things started to fall into place. Now I needed to start looking ahead...
7) A vision My goals kept changing because I didn't have a vision for my life. But now, with a clear mind and with everything I'd learnt, I had the clarity, discipline and resilience to craft a vision and take consistent steps towards it. ๐
// Final words // At times on my journey, I felt like I was going in circles, getting nowhere. But it's only in retrospect that I see I was moving in ascending circles. You might feel like you are going backwards at times, but every positive action is a step forwards. ๐
If you are working to improve your life, all I can say is: Stay the course. It will pay off in the end. And if you are in a dark place, all I can say is: Change is possible. Just take baby steps every day because incremental changes produce massive results over time. ๐
